Meet Africa’s Top Surgeon Who Can’t Read Or Write (Photos)

Image
Meet the top surgeon who can’t read or write: How an illiterate girl from the mountains of Ethiopia became the ‘future of African medicine’ – as the heartwarming reason she’s returning to the operating theatre at 73 is revealed. Mamitu Gashe was 16 when she went into labour with her first child in a mud hut in her rural village in Ethiopia. She spent four days in excruciating pain before her baby son died inside her, leaving her with horrific injuries. Mamitu sustained an ‘obstetric fistula’ which left her incontinent, uncontrollably leaking urine and faeces. Fate brought her to the capital Addis Ababa where she was treated by Australian doctor Catherine Hamlin. Barefoot and illiterate, Mamitu learned to operate on others like her by placing her hands over Dr Hamlin’s. Now 73, she has been hailed as the ‘future of medicine in Africa’ – but she still can’t read or write. Let's block ads! (Why?)

6 reasons why Òlòturé may just be the Naija film of the year

Òlòturé, a film by Ebonylife films and Netflix about the cancer that is human trafficking has been released on schedule on Netflix. With Mo Abudu at the helm, Keneth Gyang from Confusion Nawa, as director, a star studded cast and an intriguing trailer, Òlòturé appeared to be a film with great promise. Even with all that, I made sure not to raise my expectations, but Òlòturé delivered on all its promises and more. Story Òlòturé tells the story of prostitution and human trafficking from the perspectives of perpetrators, victims and those who try to stop the practice. The story revolves around Òlòturé, an investigative journalist who goes undercover as a prostitute to expose the menace of forced protitution and trafficking. Òlòturé is not a happy story and definitely does not have a *redacted* ending, but it exposes the ills of modern slavery and the inhumane conditions that people go through in search of daily bread.  Script Sure there may have been several other films with similar

Nigeria marks 60 years since it became an independent country and as a result of the pandemic, there won’t be the usual fan fair and celebrations that usually comes with the occasion. 60 years truly warrants a celebration, but in the case of Nigeria, there is absolutely nothing worth celebrating as the it gradually falls into failed state territoty. But incase you’re still optimistic and in the mood for celebration, below are 25 reasons not to. 1. Poverty According to the National Bureau of Statistics over 82.9 million Nigerians are poor. This is a disappointing number especially when you compare it with the country’s estimated population of 180 million people. This poverty was most felt during the lockdown that resulted from the coronavirus pandemic. The widespread poverty resulted in a plethora of social vices and insecurity. Simply pathetic. 2. Bad leadership  From time immemorial Nigeria has always been plagued with clueless and uninspiring leadership, and unfortunately,  it d
