The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has released a new age classification in Nigeria. At the launch of the Revised National Youth Policy, 2019 which took place in Akure, Ondo State on May 24th, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, in a foreword presented at the launch, disclosed that the age bracket for the classification of youth in Nigeria has been reviewed downward from 18 – 35 years to 15 – 29 years. Dalung in his foreword, stated that the age classification had to be reviewed downward so that every federal government intervention programmes designed for youths will get to the youths themselves and not adults masquerading as youth. According to the Minimum Age Convention (1973), the general minimum age for admission to employment or work in Nigeria is 15 years. The United Nations defines ‘youth’ as persons between the ages of 15 and 24 years, Igbere TV reports.

Adekunle Kosoko, popularly known as Adekunle Gold, has suffered a terrible loss as his father passed on late last night. Prince Hakeem Adeyemi Kosoko, the Permanent Secretary of Education District 4, died during the night after suffering an undisclosed ailment. Mr Kosoko was flown abroad due to the ailment and his position had to be temporarily filled by a replacement for over a month. He recently returned to Nigeria to recover, a source told us. Sadly, he passed on hours ago. A teacher who works under Mr Kosoko’s district in Lagos revealed to us that his death was announced to the teachers in Education District 4 this morning. The cause of death has not been revealed. He is survived by his wife, children, including Adekunle Gold, and more family members.

A 14-year-old of St. Andrew Grammar School, Ondo in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State, has lost her life as a result of building collapse within the school premises. The JSS 3 student, who was identified as Esther Akinrinola , was said to be playing with some of her friends during school hours at the section of one of the school buildings, which has been reported to be defective. The incident, which occurred on Friday during the school hours, reportedly claimed life of only the deceased student with no other casualty recorded. According to an eyewitness’ account, the girl had suffered a head injury when blocks from the failed school building landed on her head. The eyewitness further stated that the deceased gave up the ghost while she was being rushed to the hospital. The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party and its governorship candidate in Ekiti State, Kolapo Olusola-Eleka challenging the election of Governor Kayode Fayemi. Affirming Fayemi’s election, the five-man panel of the Supreme Court led by the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad unanimously held that the appeal challenging the outcome of the poll lacked merit. Justice John Okoro, who read the lead judgment, affirmed the judgments of both the Ekiti State Election Petition Tribunal and the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, which had both dismissed the petition challenging the outcome of the July 2018 poll. The Independent National Electoral Commission had declared Fayemi and the All Progressives Congress polled a total of 197,459 votes to defeated Olusola-Eleka and the PDP who placed second with 178,121 votes in the July 14, 2018 election.
