30 killed by Gunmen in Burkina Faso attack

Image
Gunmen killed around 30 people at a livestock market in the eastern Burkina Faso town of Kompienbiga, local residents said Sunday, in an attack blamed by a security source on jihadists. The assailants “burst into the market riding motorbikes and started shooting, especially at people who were trying to flee”, one resident said, estimating the death toll at around 30 from the attack on Saturday. A second resident said: “It’s hard to say how many people were killed. There were bodies in the market and others in the bush.” But he added: “More than 30 bodies were collected” after the attack. He said his brother was at the market at the time and he had had “no news” from him since. EFCC, Interpol fail to arrest fugitive ex-NIA DG, wife, 15 months after

Image
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the International Police have yet to arrest a former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Amb. Ayodele Oke, and his wife, Folasade, declared wanted for N13bn money laundering. This is happening 15 months after they were placed on the global wanted list for failing to appear in court to answer for the money laundering charges preffered against them. After declaring the couple wanted, the EFCC was said to have sought the assistance of the Interpol in apprehending the fugitives, but nothing has been heard on the matter since then. The then acting EFCC spokesman, Tony Orilade, had told  Saturday PUNCH   in March 2019 that the commission had asked the Interpol to arrest the couple wherever they might be hiding. He stated that the commission expected all Interpol member-countries to execute the arrest warrant issued against them. Oke and his wife had reportedly travelled out of the country for medical treatment in Jan

Extrajudicial killings by the Nigerian Police that Sparked Outrage

For a while now Nigerians, especially the youth have lived in constant fear of not just criminals, but of the security forces, particularly the police and SARS that swore to protect them. There have been continuous harassment, intimidation, extortion and outright murder perpetrated by these men of the force on Nigerians. Young people are unable to walk freely for fear of false accusations or harassment by the police who now identify every good looking young Nigerian as a fraudster. The unfortunate thing about the problem with the Nigerian police is the swift rise from harassment and extortion to rampant extrajudicial killings and the conspicuous numbness of the government. Even when the killer cops are arrested, no one hears anything about the case beyond that point, as it somehow dies down or fades away. The citizens have organised marches and peaceful protests both offline and online with the popular #EndSars trend. However, it seems like everything falls on deaf ears and the killin

List of African Countries By Literacy Rate

Adult literacy rate is simply total percentage of the population age 15 and above of a country who can, with understanding, read and write a short, simple statement sufficiently. Over the last couple of years, there has been an increased acknowledgement of the importance of education, resources have been easily accessible thanks to technology, learning has evolved, and ultimately global literacy rate has experienced a significant rise. However, unfortunately, not every corner of the earth is feeling this evolution, and not all governments have acknowledged its importance. Several countries still lag behind and are in a continuous struggle to provide adequate education. This is as a result of several factors such as policies, infrastructure, accessibility and quality of education. This is unfortunate, because it puts the citizens in a disadvantaged position as they strive to succeed in the global market. Below is a list of African countries and and their literacy rates 1 . Timeline Of The Southern Kaduna Attacks Since 2014

For about 20 years, Kaduna State has experienced a rapid split along religious and ethnic lines. Northern Kaduna is widely populated by the Muslim Hausa-Fulani while the south is more diverse, with Christianity the predominant religion. This split has resulted in widespread violence, and this has taken a greater dimension since 2014. Thousands of people have been either killed or displaced and countless homes have been described.  The majority of these attacks have been carried out by the northern Hausa-Fulani against the christian populated south. Despite the devastation caused by these attacks, it seems like the Kaduna state government and the security personnel are unable to put an end to it, hence the continuous recurrence.  For the sake of history, below is a timeline of major attacks since 2014.   March 2014 – At least 100 villagers were killed across four communities of Manchok in Kaura local government. The attacks linked to disputes between ethnic groups. January 2015 –
